Usher Fellig, aka 'Weegee'

Usher Fellig, aka 'Weegee', (b) Zolochiv, (now) Ukraine 1899 - 1968.

Early work was with a 4x5 Graphic, photographing crime scenes in NYC.

No formal training and yet in 1943 five of his photographs were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, and later included in another MoMA show organized by Edward Steichen.

Advertising and editorial assignments followed, including Life and Vogue.

My interest in Fellig was through his experimental work produced in the 50’s and 60’s, with panoramics, infra-red, extreme wide-angle photographs, prism and photo-distortions (the most famous, Marilyn Monroe, well before Photoshop made it routine).

He also traveled widely in Europe in the 1960s, where he added nudes to the portfolio.

His widow, Wilma Wilcox, donated the entire Weegee archive to the International Center of Photography, New York. This 1993 gift became the source for several exhibitions and many books include "Weegee's World" and "Unknown Weegee". The 1992 film ,The Public Eye, was based (loosely) on his life, (starring Joe Pesci).
